Just happened upon this interesting post which echoes my views on the whole Blu-Ray v HD DVD battle…which is essentially “who cares anyway?”
How far away is super-cheap, super fast broadband? And when that time comes, won’t we all be downloading films in HD rather than buying or renting them?
My generation may still be wedded to the “I want the box” mentality of the DVD and CD but younger consumers aren’t, and it’s hard to see how Sony’s financial enticements to ensure it doesn’t do another Betamax can be justified.
I’m sure the postal DVD retail companies must also be looking to move their business on-line rather than having to buy massive quantities of titles and use something as messy as the postal service as a distribution channel.
So, the battle may be won, but it’s likely to be a pointless battle in a war that could very well become an irrelevance…much like the aforementioned ear, oh and laser discs.
